I draw inspiration from several artists — Georgia O’Keefe, Wolf Kahn, Stephanie Johnson — but lately find Rothko especially captivating. It’s his belief in his own work, that it would “envelop” the viewer and provide them with a unique experience; that he was endeavoring into “unknown adventures in an unknown space.” His work was an expression of human emotion - tragedy, ecstasy, doom, joy. He gave the gift of feeling, visual exhilaration, spirit, and space. It’s deeply personal. It transports me to parts of my brain that isn’t tangible. It allows me to access the reality beyond my perceptions of reality; to realize what I see, hear, and feel are only a projection created by my senses and my brain’s interpretation of those inputs. Rothko taps into feeling for me. His repetition of process, the many squares, his meditation— they show me the inside of Rothko. I dream in Rothko. Please enjoy him with me.
